Text QR Code Generator – Encode Any Text in a QR Code
What Is a Text QR Code?
A text QR code stores plain text that is displayed on screen when scanned. Unlike a URL QR code, which opens a browser, a text QR code simply shows the encoded characters – no internet connection is required.
This makes text QR codes perfect for situations where the information itself is the final destination: a serial number, a short instruction, a product reference or an internal note. The scanner reads the code and presents the text directly to the user.
Text QR codes are fully offline-capable, which is a key advantage in environments without reliable network access such as warehouses, factories, construction sites or rural areas.
How to Create a Text QR Code
Creating a text QR code with BlueChilliesQR is straightforward:
- 1. Open the QR Code Generator and select the Text tab.
- 2. Type or paste your text into the input field. You can enter up to several thousand characters.
- 3. Adjust colours, size and error correction to suit your needs.
- 4. Download the finished QR code as PNG or SVG.
Everything happens locally in your browser. Your text is never transmitted to any server.
Use Cases for Text QR Codes
- • Serial numbers & part IDs: Encode serial numbers, batch codes or part identifiers on equipment, machinery or components for quick scanning during inspections.
- • Short instructions: Place assembly or safety instructions as QR codes on products or packaging. Users scan the code to read the text without needing a manual.
- • Inventory & asset management: Tag shelves, containers or storage bins with QR codes containing location codes, stock identifiers or handling notes.
- • Internal notes: Share brief messages or codes between teams – for example, access credentials displayed on a locked cabinet or maintenance schedules on equipment.
- • Education: Create QR codes with vocabulary, formulas or quiz answers for interactive learning materials and worksheets.
Character Limits and Encoding Modes
The maximum amount of text a QR code can hold depends on the encoding mode and the error correction level. The QR standard supports four modes:
| Mode | Characters | Max. Capacity (L) |
|---|---|---|
| Numeric | 0–9 | 7,089 |
| Alphanumeric | 0–9, A–Z, symbols | 4,296 |
| Byte (UTF-8) | Full Unicode | 2,953 |
| Kanji | Japanese characters | 1,817 |
In practice, keep your text concise. Longer text produces denser QR codes with more modules, which are harder to scan at small sizes. For texts longer than about 300 characters, consider linking to a web page with a URL QR code instead.
The encoding mode is selected automatically. If your text contains only digits, the numeric mode is used for maximum efficiency. As soon as letters or special characters appear, the encoder switches to the appropriate mode.
Tips for Effective Text QR Codes
- • Keep it short: The fewer characters you encode, the simpler and more robust the QR code. Aim for under 100 characters whenever possible.
- • Use uppercase for alphanumeric mode: QR codes encode uppercase letters more efficiently than lowercase. If case does not matter, use uppercase to produce a smaller code.
- • High error correction for harsh environments: If the QR code will be exposed to dirt, scratches or weather, choose error correction level Q or H.
- • Test with multiple devices: Different scanner apps may display long texts differently. Test with at least two devices before deploying.
