Phone QR Code Generator – One Scan to Call

What Is a Phone QR Code?

A phone QR code encodes a telephone number using the tel: URI scheme. When scanned, the user’s smartphone opens the dialler with the number pre-filled, ready to call with one tap. No manual dialling, no risk of mistyping digits.

This type of QR code is one of the simplest to create and among the most compact, since phone numbers are short strings. The resulting QR code has few modules and scans reliably even at small sizes or from a distance.

Phone QR codes are supported by every modern smartphone operating system. Both iOS and Android recognise the tel: protocol natively, so no additional apps are needed.

The tel: URI Format

The encoded data is a simple URI as defined in RFC 3966:

tel:+1-555-123-4567

The phone number should always be in international E.164 format, starting with + followed by the country code. This ensures the QR code works globally, regardless of the scanner’s location.

Hyphens and spaces are permitted for readability but are ignored by the dialler. BlueChilliesQR automatically formats the number when generating the QR code.

Some devices also support the tel: scheme with extensions, e.g. tel:+15551234567;ext=200, which is useful for corporate phone systems.

Use Cases for Phone QR Codes

  • Customer support hotlines: Print a phone QR code on product packaging, instruction manuals or warranty cards so customers can call your support line instantly.
  • Business cards: Add a phone QR code to your business card alongside your vCard QR code. Recipients can call you immediately without typing your number.
  • Emergency information: Place QR codes with emergency numbers on equipment, first-aid kits or safety signage in workplaces and public spaces.
  • Local businesses: Restaurants, repair shops and medical practices can print phone QR codes on flyers, storefront signs and receipts to encourage direct calls for appointments or reservations.
  • Real estate signs: Yard signs with a phone QR code let potential buyers call the listing agent directly from the street.

International Phone Number Format

Always use the full international format when creating a phone QR code. Here are examples for common countries:

Country Code Example
United States +1 +1 555 123 4567
United Kingdom +44 +44 20 7946 0958
Germany +49 +49 30 123456
Indonesia +62 +62 21 5060708
Japan +81 +81 3 1234 5678

Using the international format ensures the QR code works for anyone scanning it, whether they are in the same country or abroad. Local formats (e.g. starting with 0) may fail for international callers.

Phone QR Code vs vCard QR Code

A phone QR code triggers an immediate call, while a vCard QR code saves contact information to the address book. Both have their place:

  • Use a phone QR code when the primary goal is an immediate call – customer support, emergency numbers, appointment booking.
  • Use a vCard QR code when you want the recipient to save your full contact details for future reference – networking, conferences, business cards.
  • Combine both on a business card: one QR code for saving the contact, another for a quick call. Place them side by side with clear labels.
