Location QR Code Generator – Share Locations via QR Code

What Is a Location QR Code?

A location QR code encodes geographic coordinates (latitude and longitude) that open a map application when scanned. The user sees the exact point on a map and can immediately get directions – no address typing, no searching.

Location QR codes use the geo: URI scheme (RFC 5870) or a Google Maps URL. When scanned, the device opens its default map app – Google Maps on Android, Apple Maps on iOS – and drops a pin at the specified coordinates.

This type of QR code is especially valuable for locations that are hard to describe with a street address: specific entrances, outdoor venues, parking areas, trailheads or meeting points in large complexes.

The geo: URI Format

A location QR code can use either the geo: scheme or a Google Maps URL:

geo:48.8584,2.2945?q=48.8584,2.2945(Eiffel Tower)

The geo: URI is the most universal format and works natively on Android. On iOS, the system converts it to an Apple Maps link. The optional q parameter allows you to add a label for the pin.

Alternatively, you can use a Google Maps URL for broader compatibility:

https://maps.google.com/?q=48.8584,2.2945

The Google Maps URL approach works on all devices and opens the Google Maps app if installed, falling back to the browser otherwise. BlueChilliesQR supports both formats.

Use Cases for Location QR Codes

  • Stores & shops: Print location QR codes on business cards, flyers and advertisements so customers can navigate to your physical location with one scan.
  • Meeting points: Share the exact meeting location for group activities, field trips or outdoor events where a street address is imprecise.
  • Tourism & sightseeing: Place QR codes on information boards, guidebooks or brochures linking to points of interest, viewpoints or historical sites on the map.
  • Event venues: Include a location QR code on tickets, invitations or event programmes so attendees can find the venue and navigate to the correct entrance.
  • Delivery & logistics: Place location QR codes on parcels, pallets or shipping labels to identify destination points within large facilities, ports or construction sites.

Google Maps Integration

You can find GPS coordinates for any location using Google Maps. Right-click (or long-press on mobile) on any point on the map, and the coordinates appear in the format 48.8584, 2.2945. Copy these coordinates and paste them into BlueChilliesQR.

For businesses listed on Google Maps, you can also use the Google Maps share link directly. However, these URLs tend to be very long. For a cleaner, more compact QR code, it is better to use the short coordinate format.

Keep in mind that GPS coordinates are precise to about 1 metre when using 6 decimal places. For most practical purposes, 4 decimal places (accurate to ~11 metres) are sufficient.

Tips for Location QR Codes

  • Use the correct coordinate order: The geo: scheme uses latitude first, then longitude. Swapping them places the pin on the wrong continent.
  • Add a label: Include a location name in the query parameter so users see a friendly name instead of raw numbers on the map pin.
  • Verify the pin: Always scan the QR code yourself and verify that the pin appears at the correct location before printing or sharing.
  • Consider offline access: The geo: URI format can work with offline maps if the user has the area downloaded. Google Maps URLs always require an internet connection.
  • Pair with an address: Print the physical address alongside the QR code as a fallback for users who prefer typing it into their navigation system.
